Geotab Develops an OEM Telematics Platform

Geotab has long understood the concept of welcoming the strengths and threats of disruptive technologies with innovation. That is why we have developed an OEM telematics platform that allows secure transfer of OEM data to Geotab’s fleet management software to enable easy management of mixed fleets of OEM vehicles and equipment.

An Overview of the OEM Market and Its Future

The fundamental change in consumer demand for fuel, routing, maintenance, and location tracking technologies has driven a significant number of car manufacturers to take advantage of the opportunity by embedding Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) telematics devices into their vehicles to meet the increasing customer demand for connected cars.

Research conducted by M2M/IoT market research firm, Berg Insight, shows that about 32% of all new vehicles sold worldwide in 2017 were fitted with OEM telematics systems. This is a 9% increase over the previous year. North America with an attachment rate of 47% and Europe with an attachment rate of over 40% were the regions with the most shipments of OEM embedded vehicles. GM, BMW and PSA were among the major carmakers that provide the technology as a standard feature across multiple models and geographies. The research firm also estimates that the number of telematics subscribers using OEM telematics systems will rise from 49.0 million subscribers in 2017 to 258.1 million in 2023 at a compound annual growth rate of 31.9%.

Challenge Facing OEMs

Although OEMs provide a range of benefits such as tracking, navigation, safety and entertainment all in one place, they are unable to provide an integrated system for a mixed fleet of various vehicles and equipment. This is because they are proprietary, meaning they are strictly controlled by the proprietor – which in this case is the car manufacturer – in their use, distribution of data and modification. This makes tracking and managing a mixed fleet much more difficult.

The Geotab OEM Telematics Platform

A successful fleet must have a synchronized workflow. If not, they risk missing valuable, comparable data that, over time, could give them a competitive edge. To assist in this regard, Geotab has developed an OEM telematics platform to help fleets integrate car manufacturer telematics data and make it accessible on MyGeotab.

How it works

Geotab’s OEM telematics system provides cloud access to vehicle data by integrating OEM APIs on the Geotab platform to allow secure OEM data transfer to Geotab’s fleet management software – removing third-party hardware requirements.
