How Geotab Helps Businesses Grow In The IoT Space

In a world which is constantly trying to advance and evolve itself, Internet of Things (IoT) is a term we commonly come across.
Lucidea explains that IoT involves extending Internet connectivity beyond standard devices, such as desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets, to any range of traditionally dumb or non-internet-enabled physical devices and everyday objects. Embedded with technology, these devices can communicate and interact over the Internet, and they can be remotely monitored and controlled. With the arrival of driverless vehicles, a branch of IoT, i.e. the Internet of Vehicle starts to gain more attention.

Let’s look at some of the ways Geotab helps brings businesses into the IoT space:

The Geotab Unit Is An IoT Device

Simply by installing the Geotab GO device unit in your vehicle, machinery or equipment you have already connected that machine to the internet. Recorded data is relayed over a GPRS network which eventually reaches our servers and is in turn reflected on the MyGeotab software before you. Why spend hours having to extrapolate diagnostic data from machinery/equipment in person, when that data can be viewed in real-time without you ever having to set foot on-site.

Using the web-based application: MyGeotab

The days of keeping and running hardware and software on-site are gradually being phased out. Geotab has embraced this notion by ensuring that the MyGeotab system is accessible via the internet, meaning that it can be accessed by multiple devices, across multiple users, at any given time. This also cuts out any concern of loss of data or user access to the system, if company equipment previously using the system ever crashes or becomes faulty.

Automating Key Processes

A growing trend in the IoT space heavily focuses on finding the quickest and most efficient ways to get key tasks done. While this is in no way takes away from the efforts of administrators and operators, delivering results to customers and management faster, helps mitigate operation costs and time. To this end, customers can already benefit from the following:

  • Setting up automated reports to be emailed to users, on a periodic basis. This ensures driving and vehicle trends are monitored, without physically having to monitor fleet operators.
  • Setting up dashboards, which collect data from various recorded data points, and provide an updated summary of productivity on daily, weekly or monthly basis. Management can now make sales projections based on live data, instead of waiting on reports to be provided by operations.
  • Setting up exception alerts to notify users when to react to driver and vehicle behaviour, instead of round the clock monitoring by a control room.
  • Vehicle dispatching by means of a Garmin, installed with a Geotab unit, means dispatching and updating processes can be done over the software sending messages to and from the Garmin, instead of back and forth communication over the phone.

Open Software Development Kit

This simply means that the MyGeotab software can easily be integrated into your own company operating system by means of API calls. This means that data from MyGeotab can either be viewed from your operating system, or take things a step further and customize changes from your own system to be reflected on MyGeotab.

Digital Migration

As we embrace the change from analog to digital, so to tasks such as manual log books, on-site tallying and monitoring of machinery efficiency become automated and available at your fingertips. From log books separating personal & business trips to reports indicating device health checks & productivity of your machinery, this puts the data in your hands, instead of manually compiling it yourself.
These are but a few ways Geotab helps you bridge the gap in an IoT-driven world. The internet is about connecting people and making information and data more accessible. Geotab enables businesses to easily transition into the IoT space.
